Auto Complete Prohibits and/or Slows Down Shut Down

Odd problem, not sure how to address it. When I shut down it is necessary
for me to sit and monitor the process. It seems my pc will not shut properly
because 'Auto Complete' does not shut down. I get the 'Auto Complete (Not
responding)' box. In order for my pc to actually finish shutting down, it is
necessary for me to click the 'End Process Now' button, usually 2 or more
times. My pc is MS XP sp3. IE 6.0 sp3 is my default browser, but I use
Firefox 3.0.10 equally as often.

Check for malware with a number of reputable scanners
'Autocomplete' should not be present as a task, it is a subsystem in the
..dlls for Explorer IE Mozilla etc
fake tasks with almost the same names as system tasks or expected tasks is a
hallmark of malware trying to hide itself

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) computer repair shop.

Currently have Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware installed; will these do or do you
have any recommendations? Thanks.

I see that sometimes and if I do nothing wait some amount of time (any
waiting is too long for me) but it will eventually complete the
shutdown. Does this happen every time or just sometimes? Will it
eventually shutdown if you wait or does it really just sit there until
you choose to end it. Do you see a progress bar moving to the right?

A reputable malware scanner is malwarebytes - download it, update it,
do a full scan. No AV program will find everything. I use the ones
you listed, but they turn up nothing, or just some tracking cookies.

What are you using for email (MS Outlook, Outlook Express, etc.). Be
sure all your other programs are really shutdown before you try to do
a Windows shutdown. I know it is obvious, but...

Then, after malwarebytes,

I read about some registry tweaks that might help and seem to make
some people happy. Here is a link that lists 3 tweaks, but other
searched solutions usually only mention the first tweak, so I would
start with the first one:

You can always undo the tweaks if things get worse.

Microsoft's UPHclean may well help you with that. It was created to
clean up the User Profile Hive and assist in getthing things properly
shut down instead of hanging. You can read about it and download it

WOW! Thank you everyone. I just got and will now read all responses
thoroughly, then report the results. Thank you again.

Again, many thanks to all. I went with Jose's suggestion first
(Malwarebytes) and it seems to have been the answer. After installing, etc.
I ran a full scan and it found only two items (that would be two items too
many). After removing/repairing them I clicked shut down, and it shut down
without a hitch. Since I don't know how long these posts stay up I will be
keeping a copy of this entire discussion, should the problem rear its ugly
head again. Should it happen again, I will post my repairs/results in this
discussion as well. Thank you again.
