shut down freezes before completing

I have a question, my windows xp pro install (recently set-up on a new
machine back in november, installed from scratch on new hard drive, new
computer), has recently started hanging on the shut down process. Every now
and then, it works, but normally, after closing windows, and going to the
blue screen "windows is shutting down", it gets hung up. If I hard stop it
(hold down reset for 10 secs), it goes the rest of the way, and then restarts
fine. Any idea what's causing this. I have a Dell XPS 700, with intel core
duo chipset.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Microsoft released a program to fix this problem. It's not 100% but it does
help. I installed it on my much older Dell 4400. Look for "uphclean.exe" on
the Microsoft webs and you should find it.

Wow Frank,

Thank you so much for your quick reply! I will try it out and let you know
how it works (probably tomorrow morning because the machine in question is at
my home, and I'm at work right now).

Frank,

Thanks for the tip, I installed it, and it seems have worked. The
readme.txt was very informative as well, now I understand why that was
happening.
