bsod stop error

I have a new-ish (since May) dell laptop which is in top condition still
however it has started acting funny recently (not shutting down, blue screen
of death when it does start to shut down mainly and a few other things from
time to time).
On the occasions when windows actually makes it to the "windows is shutting
down" screen (once the desktop goes away, sometimes it won't even make it
that far) I get the following stop error:
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
and then
0x000000a (0x000000FF 0x00000000 0x806D4EF2)

I haven't installed any new hardware at all since purchasing the laptop and
haven't recently installed any new software.
What is causing this and how can I fix it?

When I searched for the codes in google/the knowledge base here is what I
found (still need help though):

IRQL part means a bad device driver most likely. Is there anyway to
determine which driver it is? As I said before I haven't installed any new
hardware and not recently and new software. I have checked and I have no
viruses.

When I goto the event viewer log I see a bunch of errors in the system log
(though these were not at a time when I was trying to shut down my comp) they
all say ati2mtag as the source, DAL as the category, and 43015 as the event.
Is this related in any way? I'm guessing its something to do with my display
drivers possibly since it says ati? None of the other logs display any errors.

The 0x0a message shows up a lot on knowledge base and google, mostly
articles irrelevant to my problem the few that are go along with the IRQL
thing I said above.

The 0x0ff message also seems to be something with the IRQL issue often and
the last message neither google nor ms kb turned up any results.

So I guess I've determined that the problem is most likely a driver one so
my question now is, is there any easy way to determine which driver it is and
how do I fix it?

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Try Start, Run, type "sigverif.exe" without quotes and hit OK. What
drivers are listed as unsigned? Disregard those which are not checked.

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in the
System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last problematic
shutdown. No
Information Reports please.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Can you also post a copy of the report referring to ati2mtag

Hope this helps.

There are no yellow quwstion marks in the device manager.

About 35 files were found, none of them were checked.

No errors appear in the event viewer for any of the problematic shut downs.
All errors/warnings list occur prior to shut down with only information
events any time near shutdown.

There are two different ati2mtag errors (Events ID 43015 and 43016). Neither
has a link in the description. Each of these two errors show up probably
hundreds of times with dates ranging from 6/15 through today and the time
being at random intervals it seems. Here's a copy of the event properties for
both:
