Show window contents while dragging

I have finally upgraded to Windows XP. I am enjoying the OS very much. Every is working just fine except for one slight problem that I am hoping I could get some help with

I right click on the desktop... select properties... click on the Appearance tab... click on the Effects button... and then select the "Show window contents while dragging" check box. It works fine at that point. I am able to see any window while dragging. However, after I shutdown and reboot or logoff and logon again, the "Show window contents while dragging" is not enabled. If I go back to the Effects dialog box... the "Show window contents while dragging" checkbox is NOT checked

I have tried the other check boxes on the effects page and shutting down and restarting again and they all work properly. This is the only check box in the Effects dialog that does not retain it's value after I shutdown and restart

I am running XP Pro version 2002 Service Pack 1 and have done all the updates

It's not the end of the world to live without this feature, but I just find it strange that it keeps losing my selection

Would anyone have a suggestion

Thanks

Hi Philip,

Try going to Start, r-click My Computer, choose properties. on the
performance tab, check "Show windows contents while dragging". That should
take care of your problem.

Hello JAX,

Thanks for your response. I followed your suggestion and on the "Visual Effects" page of the "Performance Options" notebook, the "Show window contents while dragging" was already checked. But on that notebook, there are 4 radio buttons...

1) Let Windows choose what's best for my computer (selected)
2) Adjust for best appearance
3) Adjust for best performance and
4) Custom:

.....followed by about 16 visual effects check boxes, including the "Show window contents while dragging", which are all checked. I selected the "Custom" radio button and then shutdown and restarted. Again the show window contents while dragging did not work after I logged back on. I re-verified this "Visual Effects" page and the radio button was back on the "Let Windows choose what's best for my computer" radio button.

STRANGE

Make that, on the advanced tab, choose performance and check the box.

If the Show Windows box is checked, I don't know where to go to from here.
Perhaps someone else will have an answer.

One more thought. Did you click on apply before you closed the window?

Philip,

a.. Close all browser windows except one
b.. Make the 'Show window contents while dragging' change
c.. After clicking 'OK' go to the top left corner of IE6 where the Title
of page resides. Click the 'e' icon and 'Close' browser window
d.. Now click 'Start' > Log off (your name), not the 'Shutdown' option,
and log off of windows
e.. Restart windows

Good Luck,

Drew

Hi guys,

Problem solved!!!

The laptop that I was experiencing the problem with was a recently purchased DELL Inspiron 8600. It seems I was not alone experiencing this problem. After many hours reading through the same reported problem on one of DELL's support forums, I came upon the answer.

The problem is in fact a DELL supplied software, the DELL Media Experience. As with other users, uninstalling this program fixes the Show window contents while dragging problem.

Thanks again for your help and suggestions. I hope this post helps any other DELL user with the same problem.

Regards
