Show this folder... greyed out?

Hi,

We are running Outlook 2003 as a front-end for Exchange Server 2003 and I'm
noticing that for some of my users the Contacts Propertie | Outlook Address
Book Tab | Show this folder as an e-mail Address Book is greyed out. I
would like to allow my users to add their contacts to the Address book or
better yet make it a default. How can I do that, turn it on by default or
give my users ability to change this setting?

The problem users apparently have no Outlook Address Book in their mail profile. They can add it through the Tools | E-mail Accounts dialog.

Thanks for the tip Sue. Is it resonable for this to be different from
computer to computer, for a given user? I would have thought that once set
it would be available on each computer the user logs into. In this case,
the user who had this problem yesterday is on a different computer today but
the 'Show this folder as an e-mail address book' option is Not greyed out on
this computer. Is this by design or could it be an artifact caused by some
other issue in my system?

computer to computer, for a given user? I would have thought that once set
it would be available on each computer the user logs into.

That depends on whether you have roaming Windows profiles set up for the user.

Sounds like they're using a different mail profile on that machine.

Oh, Ok so I would need to use roaming profiles to have everyone's email
settings follow them. I haven't been using them I thought that all the
email settings were stored on the Exchange server, that would be handier I
think. I've always found roaming profiles to be troublesome and not very
stable so I tend to avoid them.

No, I'm not using roaming profiles. But I have customized the installation
of Office, I wonder if that would be an option I can set there? I'll have
to take a look.

There is a known problem with the deployment of Outlook mail profiles using the ORK tools that sometimes results in the Outlook Address Book not being installed -- even if it is included in the customization for the installation. Users can either add it manually or you can give them a second .prf file to run that adds it and then starts Outlook.
