Should Outlook2003 Auto shutdown when minimized!

I have recently installed Office 2003 w/all appropriate service packs and
updates. If I have the application open and click the icon in the task pane
at the bottom of the screen to the right of "Start", the application will
close. Should this happen?
 
No I don't think it closes. Look in your System Tray do you see it there? Your clock is in the System Tray area.
