Should i update?

Right now i dont have enough memory to upgrade to vista home premium and i
already have full version of xp, so i just kinda want some of your opinions
on wether i should keep XP or if i should go with vista basic instead. Also
what are the big differences between home premium and basic.

What are your hardware specs? What graphics card do you have?

I most people that it is really not worth getting Vista, unless it is coming
along with a new computer. Enthusiasts that like playing around with things
would have got Vista months ago, and would not be considering Basic.

Many competent consultants would advise against a move to vista until at
least SP1. Peruse the group and you will get a feel for some of the
issues. If there is nothing in vista that you really 'need', I would
certainly wait. I'm not saying it would not work for you, just that there
is a high liklihood of significant issues.

card, radeon X1600 series video card, 768MB RAM

I dont quite have the 1GB RAM i need for home premium so im probly gona wait
for vista untill i get a new PC unless basic vista is worth it.

No,,,, you could but would be very disappointed
with your performance and the Vista Limitations.
Stick with XP and only consider Vista on much
newer hardware - read as in better than the average
systems being sold with Vista now.

I think you would be very unhappy with Vista Basic on that machine. You
are best off leaving XP on it and only getting Vista with a new computer.

Why? Just to have the "newest and shiniest OS?" If your current
operating system is meeting all of your computing needs, there's no real
reason to change your operating system.

How old is the computer you're thinking of upgrading? Have you run
Vista's Upgrade Adviser to get a feel (it's not 100% foolproof) for
what, if anything, will need to be done to get Vista to run on the system?

If you're happy with XP's performance on that box, then I'd say stick with
XP. You're on the cusp of acceptable performance, RAM wise... even for
Basic, but there may be other issues with hardware/software. Without a full
listing of your hw/sw and a general feel for what it is you use your PC
for... anyone here would be nuts to say "yeah, move to Vista."

Whatever you decide, you'll get the most out of Vista if you don't make it
an 'either / or' situation. If you want to try out Vista, then my suggestion
would be to keep your copy of XP running too. If you put all your eggs into
the proverbial Vista basket, then you may well run into with compatibility
issues for some of your favourite programs, and regret it.

Main differences between Premium and Basic are the media related programs -
MediaCenter, Movie Maker, DVD Maker etc which are absent in Basic. Worth
hanging out for the Premium if and when you can afford it imho.

My view is that you're going about this backward. A change of
operating system should be driven by need, not just because there is a
new version available. Are you having a problem with Windows XP that
you expect Vista to solve? Do you have or expect to get new hardware
or software that is supported in Vista, but not in XP? Is there some
new feature in Vista that you need or yearn for? Does your job require
you have skills in Vista? Are you a computer hobbyist who enjoys
playing with whatever is newest?

If the answer to one or more of those questions is yes (and your
hardware is adequate for Vista), then you should get Vista. Otherwise
most people should stick with what they have. There is *always* a
learning curve and a potential for problems when you take a step as
big as this one, regardless of how wonderful whatever you're
contemplating moving to is. Sooner or later you'll have to upgrade (to
Vista or its successor) because you'll want support for hardware or
software that you can't get in XP, but don't rush it.
