Should you brush your teeth before going to bed or should you say a prayer
before going to sleep? I guess that all boils down to personal preferences,
doesn't it? Personally, I never turn off my computers and never have. They
run 24/7/365.

Totally personal preference.

You will get views supporting both options, ie leaving it on reduces the
wear and tear on the mechanical components, which are stressed the most upon
starting up and shutting down, to shutting it off saves electricity and is
more environmental friendly.

I personally don't think it makes a lot of difference either way. I myself,
leave mine on while I am home whether I am awake or asleep, and shut it off
for the time I am not at home.

I do have it set to go into standye after 3 hours of inactivity.

Set up a scheduled task to have your computer hibernate after, say, 1
a.m. Hibernating saves your open applications.

I found that, next to the furnace fan running continously, my computer
was one of the biggest energy wasters.

mine is on when im home and off when i leave the house, i even shut it off
when im at home if im not going to use it, like when a movie is on i want to
watch, ill shut this down

Always wise to turn it off to let any changes you've made or up-grades to
get a fresh start each day ... also cools down processor, lets the monitor
cool down and live longer ...also is the ultimate firewall, a powersaver....

I leave mine on (24/7/365) but turn the monitor off when Im not using it to
save on monitor life.
I personally dont think it matters much weather its on all the time or you
keep turning it on or off. Like what has been said before... Personal
Preference.

Most people schedule routine maintenance in the wee hours. If you have
such, leave it on.
Turn all of it off when you're gone for an extended period.
Some run their TVs, stereos, PCs 24/7. Some run their AC in the spring and
heat in the fall instead of opening their windows too, even though its
comfortable outside, windows screens and security aside. Some leave their
vehicles running when parked at the convenience store. Some people race to
each traffic light, impeding traffic that's coordinated with the traffic
lights.
The required wattage of a PC has increased for the newer PCs. There's well
over 300 million people in this country, should they leave their PCs on or
off when not in use?

Whether Bill leaves the computer on or off at night has nothing to do
with whether he is protected from intruders. He has a router and with
SP2 he has the Windows firewall. The on/off discussion is an old one.
Servers and office computers usually stay on all the time, but unless
Bill is getting up at 3 AM to do computer work, why pay the utility
company for 12 hours of non-use? It doesn't hurt the computer to leave
it on all the time (unless you don't have an Uninterruptible Power
Supply and your electricity goes out) or to turn it off at the end of
the day when you're finished using the machine. The choice should be
made based on personal preferences.

My choice is to turn it off when not in use. And I go a step further. I
also disconect it from the phone line. I agree this is a matter of personal
choice.
