Should I Install Java

Is there any advantage, or disadvaantage, to installing Sun Microsystems'
J2SE Java Runtime Environment (J2SE v 1.4.2_05 JRE) in Windows XP Pro.

After you've installed it, you can switch between it and the Microsoft
virtual machine, as you choose

via checking / unchecking (in Internet Exporer) Tools > Internet Options >
Advanced > (under Java(Sun)) Use Java 2

So you have the added option of being able to use either Sun's or
Microsoft's, and can compare the performance of each with specific
websites.

The advantage is being able to run Java applets found on some web sites.
Only disadvantage is that some used the MSoft engine instead, and may
not run with Sun (Games on Yahoo seem to be an example); in which case
you have to look for that on third party sources. It is perfectly
possible to have both installed. The sun one comes with an item in
Control Panel, whose Browser page allows you to set the Sun one to be
used with IE or with Netscape
