Windows XP Pro and J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Problem

I noticed the last couple of days that my system's performance was
degrading to the point where it was becoming useless. I could not click
on Windows Explorer and expect it to load and refresh in a reasonable
period of time. I could not click on a subdirectory and expect it to
display for 5 to 10 seconds. I could not launch programs without
significant delay.

What happened to my system?

Well I noticed that I had two versions of Java installed on my system.
They are Java 2 Runtime Environment SE v 1.4.2_01 and J2SE Runtime
Environment 5.0.

I don't use them so I uninstalled them. First I uninstalled the Java 2
Runtime Environment SE v 1.4.2_01. This did not help my system's
performance. Then I uninstalled the J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0.

Now my system is back in normal order, and performs well. Is Sun/Java
messing with MS Windows XP?

My advise is, if you don't need them, get rid of them.

Not sound advice. Probably the issue may have been an overloaded
Java Cache or possibly a Java type Virus that was purged when you
uninstalled. Sun Java's impact on system performance shouldn't be
an issue. Usually, you need to tell it to not start the Java Console &
perhaps restrict it's self update feature.
