When I go to Add/Remove Programs, I see numerous Java files, such as

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
and
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_04
and
Java(TM) 6 Update 2
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 4
Java(TM) 6 Update 5
Java(TM) 6 Update 7
Java(TM) 6 Update 11
and
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

All but one of these is over 100 MB. Can I remove most of these?

I'd remove all but the Java(TM) 6 Update 11.

I'd be wary of the v1.4.2_04 for two reasons:

a.) It has significant vulnerabilities, and should be uninstalled.
b.) It may be part of an installed application, which would break if
uninstalled.

If that happens, you should contact the publisher of the application to see
if they have an updated version. If not, you should not reinstall that
application; rather, you should either find a better replacement, or learn
to do without.

I pitched a media server application which relied on that version of Java to
serve media files to a Sony PS2. For me, better was to replace the $59
application with a $199 piece of hardware which did the same thing without
relying on vulnerable software.

Through the Control Panel applet "Add/Remove Programs", remove ALL of those versions
except, v6 update 11.

Remove them ALL.
Reboot.
Download the latest Offline Installer for Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE)
(right now - 6 Update 11) and use it to install the latest version.
Reboot for good measure.

Next time you are offered an Update for your Java - don't accept. Simply
download the latest Offline Installer and remove the old version and install
the new bversion - keeping things nice and neat.

Java's version of 'updating' leaves a lot to be desired.

Things have changed a bit.
Since version 11, Java uninstalls previous versions.

Otherwise use JavaRa 1.12 to remove previous versions.

You can safely remove any of the older Java versions that you do
not need.

The Java developers have specifically designed their update
installation routines to leave older Java releases in place; this way
they don't have to take the trouble to make the newer versions
backwards-compatible.

However, be aware that a lot of the more complex web-based
applications - especially those connecting to Oracle databases - are
written for specific versions of Java and sometimes "break" once the
user installs a newer Java version and removes the older one.

"Since version 11"? I assume you mean Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6
Update 11?

Since - as far as consumers are concerned - "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)
6 Update 11" *is* the latest version (and it did not uninstall previous
versions during its update when I chose to try it that way hoping they had
finally fixed it); I would venture to say you are speaking of a pre-release
or from the future? heh

Yes - SUN does have an "Early Access" section:
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/ea.jsp

But I cannot say I recommend anyone - much less the common consumer - to try
out *any* beta products - much less anything with 'java' in its name. ;-)

Yes, I am talking about JRE 6 update 11 (you gave the link).
No, I am not talking about any "pre-release" version or from the future.
(and I am also not back to/from the future.)

I refer to user reports in alt.comp.freeware and other newsgroups.
http://groups.google.nl/group/alt.comp.freeware/browse_thread/thread/15f2a82235db7c40?hl=en#

Privately I use the method you described, uninstall the previous
version, restart and install a new version.

It uninstalled version 6 Update 10 when I did a manual update on 2 machines that I
use (XP & Vista) & on my folks XP box.

Interesting.
- However - how many versions did you have installed?
- In what way did you install it (online? offline?)

Makes me want to do more testing, for sure. It would be nice if it finally
did update correctly (online and offline - considering I don't plan on
giving all the users I manage adminitsrative rights to update their
software...)

I only had the latest version at the time(6 Update 10)& had been removing the
previous versions *after* updating to the latest.
PA Bear had sent this link last month, that told of this & I found that it was going
to occur,as of 6 Update 10,with the latest:
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/securityfix/2008/10/java_update_promises_to_remove.html

I usually go to Majorgeeks & get the update as they seem to come out with them before
anybody else-even before the vendors site does, sometimes.
I just ran the installer from the site.

Very good - thank you for the links/information.

I keyed in on this part of said article:
"while Update 10 promises to remove itself whenever Sun ships the next
post-Update 10 release, it doesn't remove any pre-Update 10 versions hanging
around the user's system."

So - like the OP - if you have more than JRE 6 update 10+ installed on your
system, the updates do little to clean up the mess previously made. ;-)

Good thing they finally did something - although I believe it to be an
incomplete solution - it's better than none. ;-)

That URL incorrectly states...
"In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\Java <=this folder. Delete any
subfolders except the subfolder named jre6 which was just created by the installation
above."

Do NOT do that. Programs such as Apple Quicktime will install a Java Jar in a Java folder
in the current version to when Quicktiime was installed and will set an evironmental
variable pointing to said Java Jar. If you delete the ..\Java folders you may break that
functionality.
