Shortcuts

When trying to access any of my desktop icons I get the files open from front
page, word etc instead of being directed to the program I am trying to access

That's because you created short-cuts to the actual documents. These must
open the program to access the document. If you want a short-cut to the
program itself, create one by navigating to its "exe" file, THEN create
short-cut pointing to it.
