I'm sure there must be a way to do this, but I can't figure it out. How can
I create shortcut icons that will open IE to different URLs?. In other
words, I would like to have one desktop icon that will open IE to my personal
web page, another desktop icon that will go to Gmail.com, etc. I don't want
to first open IE then search the "favorites" list

Go to one of the web sites you want to start with a desktop
shortcut.
If you're using IE7 you may have to tap the Alt key once to
display the Menu bar.
Once the Menu bar is visible, click on the File menu.
In the menu that drops down, click on Send -> Shortcut to
Desktop.

You can also create a desktop shortcut by doing the following,
Go to the same web site.
In the Address bar, click on the icon next to the web site
address and hold down the mouse key.
Drag the icon down till you reach the Taskbar at the bottom of
the screen.
When you reach the Taskbar the IE window should minimize.
You can now move the mouse pointer onto the desktop and release
the mouse button.

Good luck
