Win XP Pro SP2
Something is messed up. The icons on the desktop don't work to open
the programs. I get a message that Windows needs to know what program
to use to open the file xxxxx.lnk and offers to go on line to help
find it.
Also when I go to control panel\administrative tools, all the
shortcuts there are funny looking icons and don't work to open, for
example, computer management.
If I go to c:\windows\system32 and click on a program, such as
"services.msc" I can open it. Also I can open notepad only by going to
the system32 folder and opening it from there. It won't let me make a
usable shorcut there with the rightclick technique. Nor will going to
programs\accessories let me make a shortcut to notepad.
Basically, it seems WinXP won't use shortcuts.
Any ideas of what may have happened? Any steps to correct?
Many thanks.
