Event ID 1002:
Shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted

Fix that worked for me:

If Spybot is installed on your machine, open it, go to Immunize, and
uninstall the
browser helper that blocks bad downloads by clicking the 'Uninstall' button.
This will remove the BHO (browser helper object), SDhelper.dll, which
appears to be
causing a conflict and the crash.

I forgot to mention that the main symptom of this error was a temporary
disappearance of all items on my desktop occasionally accompanied by a short
freeze-up. Ten to twenty seconds later, the desktop would refresh and return
to
normal.
