Ihave a situation on 3 out of ten computers on a
customer’s network that I hope someone can help me
with.
Two PC's are XP Pro and one XP home. All are current with
required patches/packs. The trouble is this;
When right mouse clicking on any item that uses windows
explorer functions the PC freezes. IE, right click on My
computer, network places, right click on a file in the
open or save dialogue box within an application like Word,
excel, etc. After the freeze the only way to continue is
to "ctl alt del" log off wait for the System Shell
Extension not responding and then the Explorer.exe not
responding dialogue boxes and stop both ... then log back
on.
All computers have Office XP Pro, Corel Graphics 11 suite,
other Corel graphics software, Norton Corporate 8.0 AV,
and QuickBooks Pro Enterprise Edition. I have updated all
software packages and checked their websites for
references on this issue with no luck.
I was able to correct the problem for a limited time by
repairing/reinstalling XP pro on one of the PC’s.
The
situation reappeared in a couple of weeks.
Changing access privileges, stopping various services,
etc., has no effect. I have found no evidence of past or
present virus infection. This is a very perplexing
situation that I hope someone has an answer too.
