Hi all,
I am trying to share data folders and locally connected printers
to my workgroup. I have read the help files, and can't make
heads or tails out of it.

I have these accounts on this machine:
administrators
guest (disabled)
Stephan

This machine is connected to a LAN
with a server providing access to the internet.
other users on the LAN can see this machine,
but are asked for a password to see anything about it.

what do I need to do?

thanks
Stephan

Because you are in a WorkGroup the remote machines must supply a UserName &
Password for the machine they are connecting to in this case you have Three
choices administrators, guest (disabled) or Stephan.
You may have to prefix the user name with the machine name as well. such as
"RemoteMachineName\Stephan"

You need to setup the users on the machine that you want to share data from.
If there is a user johndoe on the network, and you want him to access files
on your machine, you must setup an a johndoe account on your machine. The
password must be the same as on his machine.

You'll need to create user accounts on the local machine, and grant
these account access permissions to the desired resources. The
usernames/passwords of these local accounts must be the same as those
these people use to log into their own machines.

Thanks everyone for your help.
I am surprised that WIN2000 pro
is like this, due to my experiance with WIN98se
and XP pro

The whole point of using NT (Win2K) is the SECURITY. That was the problem
with Win9x, no security at all.
If you do not have to give passwords then anyone can get in and play with
your stuff.
Not what I want on my system.

In this instance, security never was an issue.
I provide read only access to documents
and add additional information myself
by copying it to my machine from the source machine.
I also provide a printer
now, it seems I have to do backflips to provide
this same access.
