*HELP* file and folder sharing (2000 to xp home) - what am i doing wrong?

P

*ProteanThread*

i have a laptop with windows 2000 connected to a a desktop with windows
xp home edition using a wireless router. i can connect to the internet
on both machines and both machines have same usernames/passwords.
however, although i have enabled sharing on an external drive connected
to the desktop (and some folders on the root drive) either computer
can't see the other (though both belong to the same workgroup:
WORKGROUP) and the laptop can't see the files / folders i have enabled
sharing on the desktop (both on the root drive and on the external
drive). i enabled full control for all shared files in the shared
directories by authenticated users and specific users, but even still,
either computer doesn't see the other on the network.

did i miss something?

protocols? account restrictions? group policies (default on both
machines)? anything else?

From a command prompt;
ipconfig /all
on each. Then try pinging the other by name and by address and post the
result.

Thanks, Dave. You gave me the idea of setting the laptop as a trusted
IP with the firewall on XP. I didn't even think of that until you had
mentioned the firewall (again!). again, thanks.
