Sharing files and folders on my network

H

Harmon Koeltz

I have two computers that "see" each other on the network. The Vista
computer can access the XP computer and it's files and folders. The XP
computer can "see" the Vista computer but can only access sample music and
sample pictures. I have looked at the networking and sharing center and
can't figure out how to share. It asks me to add a person but I don't
understand. Does that mean add the name of the other computer I want to
grant access to? I don't want to move everything to the Public folder
because as I understand it, that uses twice the space on the C drive.
Basically I want to share the Documents, Pictures, and Music folders with
the other computer on my home network.
Any help appreciated

Harmon

Hi,

If you don't want to use the Public folders (and no, they do not double the
amount of space used), then you need to share your user profile's data
folders. Do so by right clicking one and choosing properties/sharing tab and
enable network sharing. Then open the network and sharing center and enable
file sharing and public sharing.

Rick,

Thanks for the insight. I have the same problem as Harmon. I tried your
suggestion of changing the properties/permissions of the user's profiles.
When I bring up the two profiles on the pc in the "User Accounts" screen
(Configure Advanced User Account Properties), I see the two profiles.
However, there is not tab that allows me to enabel network sharing. Am I
looking in the wrong place? Further guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi,

Close, you find the sharing tabs by actually right clicking the
\user\username folder in Windows Explorer and selecting properties, not from
within the Users applet in the Control Panel.

I have a similar problem and followed your suggestion. However, after
clicking the box allowing for file sharing to occur, it shows that it still
is unshared after I close it.
