SharePoint Services Error

When I try to publish my site (using FP2003 on a Win XP Home machine), I
suddenly get an error message indicating "An error occurred accessing your
Windows SharePoint Services site files...", and the publishing process
aborts.

This is a sudden development and until now everything worked just fine.

What is the likely cause of this and how can it be fixed?
