shaded circle with minus sign in word where's my file?

I saved a document and now all that comes up when I open it is a shaded
circle with a minus sign in it. The file shows a size in my computer but all
I get is the minus sign as described above. Can anyone help?

The implication is that you have a field in this document. Press ALT+F9 to
display the field construction. What does it say now?
