Severe Problem...Virus?

I am operating Windows XP. I began getting internet connection problems then
rebooted the computer. It boots all the way to the desktop, shows the icons,
then they disappear and reappear in a slow flashing manner. If I click on any
icon, the computer completely freezes. If I wait instead of clicking an icon,
the desktop goes blank except my wallpaper, and my AOL security center
launches and I am able to use it and access the internet with a perfect
connection. I can also download spyware programs and run them.
Nothing else works, however, and I can access nothing else. I have googled
all the running processes and they all check out. I've run Ad-aware,
SpybotSD, SpywareBlaster, and more. They've all found problems and fixed
them, but I still have the problem.
I started the computer in Safe Mode, and the problem is still there.
I even went on live chat with AOL to make sure it wasn't the security system
causing the problem. They said it was spyware or a virus and that their
program could not possibly be the problem.
I tried Kelly's Tweaks and Tips and used the Restore Desktop icons and
tray...nothing.

Can you use your Start button to access System Restore? If so try disabling
system restore and then run the virus and spyware scanners. Some of these
will write to system restore and reinfect your machine after a reboot.
