Vanishing Volumr Icon - aol/windowsxp interaction

G

GC

I recently installed AOL (9,0 SE) on my computer for my father in law to
use.
Sometime shortly thereafter, I noticed that the volumr icon was missing
fom the tasknar.
The control panel checkbox for "place icon on taskbar" was checked, and
under taskbar propoerties,
"always show" was selected for the volume icon.

I couldn't figure out why and contacted aol tecnical support, which was
unhelpful. They categorize it as
a harware problem, which is risible. Their support system was a oike -
they'll give you a case number,
but you can never get back to someone you've talked to before, and
apparelntl the ONLY info they
associate with the case is number and times of callins for the problem.
They did make some potentially
useful suggestions about things to try, and I did them. Below is all the
relevant information I have.

1. When I first installed AOL 9.0 SE, it placed a number of files on my
desktop, including two
unexpected configuration settings files - main.ini and dcu.ini. I wanted
to attach them to this message,
but my mailer won't allow me to do so, even if I gzip them first.

2. I uninstalled AOL. Lo and behold, the volume icon reappeared on the
taskbar.

3. I virus and spyware checked the computer, checked that "place icon on
taskbar" was checked for the
volume, and changed the taskbar propreties to not hide inactive icons.
Then I reinstalled AOL, watching carefully,
and observed the following behavior.
a. mo configuration setting files appeared on the desktop.
b. the volumr icon was on the taskbar, and the control panel and
taskbar setings were unchanged. Wen I briefly
changed to "hide inactive" yhe volume control was listed as a
current item, with the familiar ear icon. I switched
back to "do not hide"
c. when I rebooyed the computer, the volume icon dissapeared. Control
panel and taskbar properties were ubchanged,
but when I switched to "hide inactibe" and "configure", the colume
control was no longer a current
item, but a past item, and it had a different icon associated
with it (a yellow square or rectangle of some sort).

I would like to have both an installed version of AOL and my volume icon
back. Obviuosly, I think that what happened
is due to the AOL installation. But there does not seem to be a way to
file a bug report with aol, nor is it possible to
speak to someone who is knowledgeable enough to fix the problem (if it
can be done at all without changing the installation
ptocess). In fact there seems to be about a 1 ib five chance of getting
a tech support person who can even comprehend that
this might noy be a hardware problem.

Incidentally, if this message appears garbled because of line wraps or
variable vs fixed font issues, could someone be kind
enough to tell me what to do about that?

That's good as this is an ASCII text-only newsgroup ...

I'm not the expert here, so I'll only suggest two obvious things in hopes
that you're overlooking something.

1. On the taskbar there is a blue circle with a left arrow in it. Clicking
on that reveals some icons that are hidden for space-saving purposes.
Perhaps the volume icon is merely hidden?
2. If that isn't the problem, go back to the control panel, uncheck the box
to always show the volume icon, and save that. Then go in again, and
re-check it and save that. Oftimes that works, though I don't know why.

Good luck.
