looping to login screen

Hello
My son's laptop is playing up.
When you startup, it goes through the normal start up, then passes the
welcome tune, when it gets to the desktop, the wallpaper is there but no
desktop icons or taskbar, nothing, for a few seconds then the logoff plays
then it goes to the blue screen with my son's logon icon. Clicking the
logon (no password) it just goes through the same process.
I started in safe mode and did a virus scan which found nothing and did a
spyware search with Adaware which found the usual stuff but nothing else.
Please can you help as he's got all his college work on there.

Now I can't get in with safe mode either. Same thing is happening there too.
