stuck on logon screen

Hello
My son's laptop is playing up.
When you startup, it goes through the normal start up, then passes the
welcome tune, when it gets to the desktop just for a few seconds, the
wallpaper is there but no
desktop icons or taskbar, nothing, then the logoff plays
then it goes to the blue screen with my son's logon icon. Clicking the
logon, it just goes through the same process.
I started it in safe mode and did a virus scan which found nothing and did a
spyware search with Adaware which found the usual stuff but nothing else.
But now I can't even get into safe mode.
Please can you help as he's got all his college work on there.
(winXP)
Thank you.

No backups - I assume?
Unwise. Suggest first thing you do is purchase an external hard disk drive
for backups.

Are you saying you cannot log into Safe mode as the user 'administrator' any
longer?

If not - you will need to boot with something like a BartPE CD and copy what
you need or image the entire drive to guarantee the integrity of the data.
You might also look into a repair install (after you make a backup of what
you have.)

Download my new userinit fix from here
http://pcbutts1.com/downloads/tools/tools.htm this file works for SP2 and
SP3 only. READ the enclosed instructions. If you have SP1 do not use this
file. If you need any other version then email me using the link at the
bottom of my webpage. Your issue is caused by a malware infestation. Once
fixed you will need to use my Remove-it software, it will remove that
malware from your system. Choose yes for all options when prompted. Download
it here http://pcbutts1.com/downloads/tools/tools.htm
