Setup stops reading files from CDROM

I am doing a clean install of XP. Install starts just fine and then, partway
through the process, I get a message that says a particular file cannot be
read from the CDROM and I can choose to retry, skip, or abort. If I select
retry sometimes it will read the file, but more often it returns to the same
screen. If it does read the file, it may read one or several more files
before the message shows up again. The machine is a dual core AMD X2/64 on an
ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe MB with 4GB RAM. I have replaced the CDROM drive and
that doesn't help. I have used several different install disks, both 64 and
32 bit versions and still have the problem. I wonder if the computer may be
too fast for the CDROM to read the files before the computer says it is not
available.

Suggestions on what is happening and how to deal with this?

Thanks

I rechecked the media and it looks fine. I also put it into another machine
and it read OK. The machine did read the CD fine for a while before the
problem, and it had the same problem when I tried other install CDs. I
checked the cables again and they are connected properly. I believe the
problem is somewhere else.

Thanks,

David

Since you know the cd works elsewhere and you've tried a different
drive, the problem must be with some other hardware component. Start
your diagnostics with the hard drive and then do the RAM.

I checked the HD and it is fine. I was able to create a DOS partition and to
copy all the files from the CD to the hard drive. The RAM seems fine too.
Once again, I suspect it is a problem with the XP setup program expecting the
files faster than the CDROM is able to copy them. I read a KB article that
gives the idea of using the first Windows 98 floppy install disk to boot the
computer, copy the files to the HD and install from the HD (now if I can only
find a Windows 98 install disk).
