Greetings folks,
Usually the issues I run into can be solved with a little searching, trial
and error, and plenty of mountain dew. This one however has me stumped -- and
I beg the assistance of anyone who can help me get to the bottom of it.
Upon a fresh reinstall of WinXP Pro on the computer in question (core 2 duo
2.4ghz on an Asus P5W-DH Deluxe), the CDROM (a Lite-On DVD+/-RW w/
lightscribe, connected as PATA bus 0 device 0/master and jumped accordingly)
will no longer read executables from inserted discs.
Upon inserting a disc, the drive's title under "My Computer" changes but the
icon does not update. It attempts to autorun and fails with a "The
application failed to initialize properly" error 0xC0000006. Double-clicking
it to start autorun simply does the same thing again. Exploring the drive
works -- with the exception that no custom icons are displayed. Attempting to
open or execute an .exe or .dll file fails with the above error, yet
attempting to open any data file works normally.
The drive is known to be good (it was used to install windows) as well as
the discs. This is an existing system, not a new build, and worked normally
hours before. I tried reinstalling the CDROM in device manager, installing
all updates available, messing with various settings, and yet it still does
the same thing.
Google reveals a few others have had the exact problem but they have all
either not found a solution, or it was a hardware fault (IDE cable not
connected correctly etc). I checked over the connections but like I said, it
was working prior to the reinstall and no hardware changed in that time.
I have no idea what would cause windows to be able to see data files but not
executable files; this makes no sense to me at all. If anyone could provide
any insight, I would be very appreciative.
