Setup Problems

I recently tried to download a driver for my friends printer for HP.com and
when i went to install it, Windows began to give me serious problems. The
start menu wouldn't open and all of the folders were 'open with' icons. I
tried to do a system restore and it would let me. Thinking that re-installing
Windows would help I got the disk and tried, however when I went to install
it, the laptop kept shutting down. At one poin thowever the disk deleted the
operating system and still won't install XP again. What should I do?

you need to boot to the cd, to install, you do have the laptop plugged in
while your doing this right?,, not trying to run off battery?
