Setup of Remote Desktop

How do I setup my Desktop (XP PRO MEDIA CENTRE) so I can have a RDC in place.

can i do this on a LAN? using crossover ethernet between the Laptop and
Desktop.

I want to be able to work on the LT using the desktop of the PC, so I can be
more portable.

My house has ethernet running through it. but i dont have a switch, so use
a crossover from wall point to LT.
