Connecting my Desktop and laptop by cable??

I have connected my desktop (windows XP home version) to my laptop(windows XP
media centre version) by a cross over cable from ethernet port to ethernet
port. The computers recognize there is a connection but I can't set up up the
network. Just spend 2 hours with a call center guy in India but no result.
The only thing i want to do is to sync my files between the desktop and
laptop. Is there anybody who can help me please?? Thx Arjen - Singapore

I can help with the connection issue. The synchronisation is another problem.
