connecting 2 computers thru cross cable

hi
i tried to connect my two laptops having WIN XP thru a cross cable and i
made a shared folder on the laptop but it doenot show in my network places
-microsoft windows network
i dont see anything of the other laptop though i see the ethernet adapter
are connected by the cross cable
what could be the possible reason for that??
please help

On top of what Jack said, to be more specific, it's easiest to share things
if you have both computers set up to have static IPs when using a crossover
cable.
