Setup Hangs with 2 Minutes Remaining (Saving Settings)

In attempting to repair a Windows XP installation with a slipstream XP SP1
installation CD, Setup gets stuck with 2 minutes remaining at the "Finalizing
installation" step (Saving Settings). Letting it run for a day or longer
just stays stuck in this same place. Rerunning Setup results in the same
thing. I've tried the advice in KB 811267 with no help.

Is there a way to abort Setup and just get back to the original XP
installation? Or how to get beyond this hangup?

I have seen something like this before. Eject the CD and hit enter and see
if it continues.
