Setting up Remote Desktop

Nik

I have an IBM laptop and a Compaq Tablet PC Connected
via a Netgear Wireless ADSL router. I have opened up the
Telnet port 3389 and have managed to make remote desktop
work using Web Remote Desktop. I have also turned on
remote Desktop in the system property Tab of both
computes (I am trying to connect to the IBM from the
Tablet). However when I try to Select remote users there
are no remote users to select. Under Object Types the
only type is "users" and in "From this location" I can
only Select the local Computer being the IBM (or he IBM
or the Compaq or the Tablet PC). If I click on advanced
and "Find now" I can only find the user accounts on the
Local IBM Computer. I have no options that allow me to
Search for or find a computer on the Network.

When I select the remote Desktop Client on the Tablet PC
and select "Browse for more" it finds the MSHome
Workgroup, clicking on this brings up the following error
message

"The MSHome Domaine/Workgroup does not contain any
terminal Servers"

Can anybody tell me what I am doing wrong I have searched
all the MS knowledge base files I can find and the
newsgroups and cannot find any information on this
problem?

Also networking seems fine I can find and open shared
files from both computers

Normally you can not browse for other computers in the Remote Desktop connection browser *IF* your
in a work group environment. Call using the local LAN IP or NetBIOS name of the PC you want to
connect to. With that said, if you really want to browse, then look at this KB article for help.
Note you need to reboot each PC after you make the registry change.

As far as adding users to the Remote Desktop Administrators Group on the Remote Desktop "host" PC, I
think what your trying to do, ie. the search function, only works in a domain environment. What you
need to do is to log onto the remote box using a User ID that is both part of that machines Remote
Desktop Administrators Group and has a password. Set that up on the remote PC before you try to log
in remotely.

Thank you for your help.

I have managed to get the IBM to broadcast and now can
browse and find the IBM from the Compaq using the browse
facility.

Can you tell me why I cannot browse or search for
computers on the host (IBM) computer from within the
Remote Desktop setup? Is this because this facility is
only available or servers or am I doing something wrong?

Also can you help with something else for some reason the
ability to turn on Remote Desktop on my Compaq is grayed
out?

You need to set up browsing, as noted in the KB article on all PCs in your workgroup in order to
browse and find them from the other PCs Remote Desktop connectoid.

Its possible a Group Policy is enabled on the Compaq device. Go to "Start -> Run" and type
gpedit.msc at the command line. Navigate to the "Local Computer Policy -> Computer Configuration ->
Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Terminal Services". Highlight and double-click on
"Do not allow new client connections". Set the policy to "Not configured".

This all presumes the Tablet version of the OS is XP Pro or a clone and not XP Home, which does not
support Remote Desktop in a "host" mode. Perhaps Jeffrey Randow, MS-MVP, can comment on that...
