services?

why do i have to start my services manually? they are set to automatic. like
to download something i'll get an error about windows installer. i learned
that if i go to control panel/administrator options/ services and scroll down
to windows installer and double-click to go to properties, it says it is on
automatic but it is not started. so i start it and go back to the prior
download and try again and all goes well. Why do i have to start it?

i also have to do this with defender and dchp client before i get onto the
net via a cable modem.

any thoughts?

It should be Started and Manual, correct? Start > Run and type in

eventvwr.msc

See if there is any error related to Windows Installer service.
