Windows XP Home sp on a netbook as started running very slow

Hi all, Got a bit of a problem with a Netbook that's started to slow right
down to snail pace, It seems that the cpu is running at 100% for about a few
minutes then start's working normally again. The system has started to take
a very long time to fully load & when I go to do a right mouse click or open
a folder it takes about a minute just for the menu or folder to open. It's
only just started doing this from fully updating the system as when I bought
the machine, It just came with windows & service pack 3, nothing else
installed. So I went to MSI's website on my desktop & downloaded all the
updated drivers for it & used autopatcher xp on the desktop machine &
downloaded all the windows updates for service pack 3 & transferred
everything across to a 2 gig USB stick and installed everything offline onto
the netbook, also installing, avast av software & windows defender before
installing the USB hsdpa modem. I've done a av scan & spyware scan and both
come up clean. The system is a MSI wind netbook running at 1.6 gig cpu, 2
gig ram upgraded from 1 gig of ram 10.1" monitor , 120 gig hard drive, Wifi
& bluetooth built in, 3 usb 2 ports & a MMC / MS / SD card reader slot with
a 1.3 webcam built into the monitor

is there a program what i can use to find out what programs are being run on
system boot up & what services are being run & what services I don't need to
use? as I want to find out what's causing the system to slow right down to a
crawl, If I re-install windows I would do, but without having a USB drive
for the netbook that's hard lol. cheers
