best way to install this?
they want to do it by going to each work station
is there a faster way?

Install a SUS server.
Configure GPO to have the clients pull the update from SUS.

Probably faster than going to each workstation, depending on how many
workstations you have and how many workstations initiate the download at the
same time.
Obviously the SP will cause mega network traffic.
I'm not too savy on SUS. It is not difficult to set up.
Never used it to deploy an SP though. They added that to SR1 for SUS.
Last time I used SUS was before SR1 release.

Never had an issue with LAN traffic - WAN traffic is different.
