Service Pack 2 installation problem

I hope someone can help me with this!

I Just purchased a compaq r3230 laptop. Specs are: AMD 64 +3000, nvidia
graphics card, windows xp home service pack 1. I apologize since i have not
had this computer long i do not know much of it yet...if there are any other
specs you need to know please inform me!

My issue is when i download Service Pack 2, and restart it, it boots up to
the prompts " start in safe mode : start normally etc " i try to boot up
normally and a blue screen flashes with info i cannot read, and then starts
its boot cycle all over again. In order to get into the os i need to boot up
in safe mode and then system restore. I cannot seem to pin point the
downlaod...just that it definately is when i install Service Pack 2.

Has anyone come across this issue before? and if so is there anything i can
do? I was thinking of formatting c, but then it occured to me it is a brand
new computer....there shouldn't be much conflicting with it. i will if i have
to but would prefer to see other solutions if possible.

Thank you so much for your time~

Thank you very much for your help! i did download the video driver update
from compaq/hp website. Unfortuntely though it did not work...however i think
i may have also made a mistake. I am kind of confused when it comes to the
updates. I am not positive if the service pack is in the updates...but if it
isn't then THOSE are what are screwing up my comuputer. It is the automatic
updates that i install and then will not let me boot up normally.

But again i do thank you for your info and i did as the websites suggested.

if there are any other suggestions i would be very greatful!

thanks again!

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click
on the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties,
Advanced, StartUp and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck
box before Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until you have
resolved the problem. Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

There will also be Error Reports in Event Viewer. Please post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.
