"Serious Error" message

Each time my computer boots up I receive the following message:
"The system has recovered from a serious error".
When I click on for more information I get the following:
"BCCode: 1000007f BCP1 :00000008 BCP2 : 80042000 BCP3 : 00000000 BCP4 :
00000000 OSVer:5_1_2600 SP : 2_0 Product : 768_1"
If I request the technical information this is the files that will be
included in the error report:
C\DOCUME~1\Howard\LOCALS~1\TEMP\WERdd80.dir00\Mini042307-02.dmp
C\DOCUME~1\Howard\LOCALS~1\TEMP\WERdd80.dir00\sysdata.xml
The computer continues to function normally as long as I am working with the
keyboard or mouse. If I try to do a system scan or other process that may
take some time with no intervention from me I receive the blue screen and the
message:
"Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer" Then it
goes on to say basically to run a diagnostic utility that was supplied by the
hardware manufacturer. My computer was built at a local computer store to my
specs and they said that more than likely it is bad memory or a bad
motherboard.
Do you feel that this is a correct diagnosis? They say it will take at
least a week to fix and I honestly cannot be without it that long.

Thank you so much, Mark, for you timely response.
I followed all the steps in the MS link you provided and re-booted but the
"serious error" message keeps appearing. As I said in my original post, the
computer is behaving normally and works OK but the pesky message will not
stay deleted. Any other thoughts or should I start thinking about hardware
issues? I am running XP Home with an Intel board and Pentium 4 CPU and 1 gig
of memory.

I would first try Error Checking the drive(rightclick drive icon, Properties,
Tools tab), and if no help, would try to find some hard drive diagnostic
utility. Anything that blue screens XP is going to be a corrupt driver or
other hardware error. The Event Viewer might put you on the track of a driver.
