Serial ports

My system does not appear to have any serial ports, (none shown in device
manager) and refuses to install one when I try 'install new hardware'.
Searching MS Support has proved fruitless can anyone suggest anything?
It also refuses to install USB 2.0

System:
AMD 2400 Giabyte GA7VX board WinXP PRO with all updates 512 mem

USB to serial converters are available from several companies such as Belkin
{bilkin.com}.

Explain more about your USB 2.0 problem. If you have installed Windows XP
SP-1, you have USB 2.0 support provided your USB port hardware is 2.0. If
your USB port hardware is not 2.0, then you need to install USB 2 hardware
{such as a PCI card}.
