I have a handheld two-way radio which is programmed via a software
application. I have the software running on two computers, a desktop and a
laptop. The laptop is a Dell running XP Home (SP2) and the desktop is a new
custom build running XP Pro. I am trying to connect to the radio with a USB
converter cable. I successfully did this with my desktop and had no problem
accessing the radio. I plugged in the cable on the laptop and it installed
the drivers from the disk , however when I look for a serial ports in device
manager the only thing displayed is LPT1. I have uninstalled and
reinstalled the drivers for the USB converter cable several times w/ no
change. The USB device shows in device manager under the USB Controllers,
but I should have a COM port as well under the Ports icon so that I can
match the port settings in the software I'm using with hardware port
setting. I should say that the laptop has no com ports which is why I'm
using the USB converter cable. Also, the USB converter cable was supplied
by the radio manufacturer (Bendix/King). Anyone out there have any idea
what I have to do to "install" a com port.
