COM port to USB compatability

I have recently purchased a motorbike computer that requires connecting to
the PC using an RS232 cable into COM port 3 or 4. My laptop hasn't got any
RS232 ports so I bought an RS232 to USB 2.0 cable. Now the software will only
look at COM port 3 or 4.
Is there a way to tell the laptop that a specific USB port is either COM
port 3 or 4?
Thanks for any assistance!

Often USB - com port adapters will create a com port around 6 or 7. You
can change this through the Device Manager.

Right click on My Computer, Properties, Hardware, Device Manager. Locate
the Comm port in question, choose right-click and choose Properties. Click
on Port Settings, then Advanced. At the bottom right, there's a control to
change port numbers.

Cheers Patrick,
That info was spot on, however both COM ports 3 & 4 are in use and I can't
seem to find out what is using them... How can I find out what it is so I can
change them first. I get a warning message telling me I will cause problems
if I continue...
Thanks again.
