Problem with serial port and XP service pk 2

I bought a Extended Systems Jeteye serial IrDa device to use with my glucose
meter. I installed the new hardware, 1st using Extended Systems built in XP
drivers - my meter wasn't communicating with the Jeteye. Then I reinstalled
the Jeteye using built in XP standard IrDa protocols - once again, my meter
isn't being detected. I can tell the IrDa device is working because the
indicator light is blinking and looking for another device to talk to. I have
tried using the device on COM 1 and COM 4.
When I check which driver is being used there are 2 listed:

c:\Windows\system32\drivers\irenum.sys (ver. 5.1.2600.21800 -
xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)
and
c:\windowns\system32\drivers\irsir.sys (ver. 5.1.2600.0 - xpclient
010817-1148).

The driver that it keeps defaulting to is the one for service pack 2. I;ve
read on other boards that there is a problem with SP2. How to I indicate that
I want to use the other driver?
I really need to get the serial port working with the device. I tried using
a USB IrDa device, but the glucose software wants to communicate with serial
port only.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Helen , did you install the adapter first and then the software ?
( Apologies if this sounds wrong , taking info off Google )

Are there any COM ports listed in Device Manager - under Ports? The
drivers installed for a standard COM port should be 'serenum.sys' and
'serial.sys'. If you don't see any COM ports listed they might just be
disabled in the system BIOS - or nowadays, some computers don't even
have COM ports. Just FYI, a standard COM port has 9 pins and is shaped
like a 'D'.

Jim,
I didn't have to install any software because supposedly this is a plug and
play device. I did go to ESI's website and download drivers, but they aren't
for XP. The only installation was adding new hardware via the wizard.

What OS were you using previously Helen? IrDA and COM ports changes
dramatically in 2000 and XP as compared with 95/98; removing certain
support...

How did things work previously? Plugged the serial IrDA dongle into COM1
and to the glucose software to use COM1? If so just do the same here,
removing all the XP's standard IrDA protocol stuff first.

Otherwise if you told the glucose software to use a 'virtual' port, that is
as listed in the IrDA control panel, then the built-in support for that has
gone. You can use the third-party software from www.ircomm2k.de.
