What you are seeing are SEQ field codes. Use Alt+F9 to toggle the
display of fields (including SEQ fields).
To insert a field in Word: Press Ctrl+F9; this inserts the field
delimiters, {}. Then type the field code. Press F9 to display the
result.
You can duplicate a field by copying and pasting it.
Note that fields do not update automatically, which will be especially
apparent if you used copy and paste to create it. You can force an
update by selecting the whole document and pressing F9. Switching to
print preview usually forces an update too.
SEQ fields, specifically, allows you to create as many sequences of
numbers as you like. Each sequence is identified by a name, which you
can choose. For example:
{ SEQ myseq }
If no switches are present, the first occurrence of a SEQ field
displays the Arabic number 1. Subsequent occurrences each display the
next number in the sequence.
You can add the \r switch to set a starting number. For example, the
following SEQ fields
{ SEQ myseq \r 45 }
{ SEQ myseq }
would display numbers 45 and 46, respectively.
More switches are available. For example, the \s switch forces a
restart after the specified heading level. To learn more about SEQ

I recently received a document file with this command. The actual command was
longer. It allows the document to have numbered paragraphs followed by small
alphabet letters for different sections of a paragraph. I know this like
outlining, but I cannot find out how to set this in my own
documernts.How?
