Sent mail stays in outbox until program restarted

When I send a mail (Vista / windows mail) is sticks in th outbox. If I click
send and receive it does nothing. To get the mail to go I have to close
Windowns mail and then re-open it, the application connect to my internet
mail account and sends the mail.

I am using Norton 360 virus software. I have applied KB94190 but this has
but this has not resolved the problem. If there is nothing in the outbox and
I click the send/receive button and mail waiting on the server will come down.

Anyone any ideas?

You might try it with the Norton antivirus software uninstalled.

Have you tried both the 32-bit version of KB94190 and the 64-bit version?
Only one will install, but which one depends on which version of Vista you
are using.

Click on Tools, then Options, then Send. If there is no check mark in the
box before Send messages immediately, click on this box and then Apply.
Click on OK.

Seems to be a bit drastic to un-install/re-install the virus software as this
can takes ages. I have tried disabling the e-mail scanning but this made no
difference. I am using the 32bit version of Vista and the 94190 patch that
shows up ok in the installed KB's.

There doesn't seem to be anything on the Symantec/Norton site to help either

Everything else in my Vista system seems to work very well, a pity the
default mail client seems to have so many problems :(

Otherwise, I'm out of ideas.

Windows Mail is known to be very susceptible to interference from
aggressive antivirus programs. You basically have two choices:
a) upgrade to Windows Live Mail, or b) replace your Norton AV.

a) see http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview
Even with WLM, you will need to disable Norton's email scanning feature.

b) Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee and
Norton security programs. Those will need to be uninstalled,
not just disabled.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download
and install a more compatible antivirus like the free Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their
email scanning option turned off. For more on this topic see

I think I'll just live with the problem, I don't feel inclined to uninstall
Norton 360, and after all this is one of the world’s largest and most
successful virus defence programs.

At some stage I'm sure either Symantec or Microsoft will sort out this issue
unless this is a deliberate ploy by Microsoft to "encourage" users to move to
one of their products. Equally Symantec need to recognise that it is in
their interest to be able to support integration with the most popular
applications in use otherwise they will loose their market.

I am going to watch the situation with interest.

Just had a session with Symantech support, with firewall and scannng turned
off the problem still persists. Symantech deny this problem is caused by
their software.

Wanting your money seems to adjust the opinions of many antivirus
companies about what working well with Vista means.

Of course Symantec support would deny it. Would you badtalk your
employer's main product?

What would it cost you (as a test) to temporarily uninstall Norton,
reboot, then try your Windows Mail again? If no improvement,
you can always reinstall Norton. If nothing else, it would help
to pinpoint where the cause of the problem is.
