I'm trying to make a disc of my website which opens automatically when the
disc is inserted.
Although I have copied the site onto disc, the standard options on insertion
are displayed, ie What do you want windows to do?-Play using media player,
print the pictures etc.
I have created another index.htm outside of the main website folder with
hyperlink into the index.htm inside the website folder but still get the
same standard disc insertion options.
How do I get an autostart of the index.htm?

you need an autorun.inf file in the very outside root of your disk.

it's easy to make just open notepad and place the following code in it:

[autorun]
shellexecute=index.htm

save the file as autorun.inf and burn it to the disk on the outermost level.

note, you will have to change the file after the = to reflect the index file
on your disk.

let me know how it goes. keep in mind, while this is about the best method
for consistently producing the results, there are settings on the users
machine that you have no control over that can prevent the disk from
throwing them right to your index page.

Note

On NT systems (NT4, 2000, XP, 2003) autorun will not execute
for a standard user. The user needs to be logged in as an
administrator for it to function. 9x machines (95,98, ME)
this is not an issue.

XP SvcPack2- Javascripts are blocked by default. If the
users receive a message regarding Active Scripting, they
will need to allow the scripts to be run. To change the
settings, open IE and then >Tools >Internet Options
Advanced and then scroll down to >Security. Check the top 2
boxes (Allow active content...)

No problem with the autorun.inf but when disc is inserted, instead of
opening the index.htm in IE it opens in the normal windows explorer.
The contents of the inf file is exactly as you say, and the remainder of the
disc I burn has on it the index.htm then a folder containing the website
files. The index.htm which sits alongside the inf file is linked directly to
the index.htm within the folder.
Have also tried replacing the shellexecute with open but this doesn't do the
trick either.
I can't think what you mean by burning the autorun.inf on the outermost
level. All Nero will let me do is drag and drop the files into the same
place.
Should I be burning this as a data disc or is there another way such as
making a boot disc?

you should open your "real" web with FrontPage, then file/publish and
publish it to a new location on your hard drive, for instance
c:\burn_directory, then pick up this burn directory with your cd burner (the
whole folder), then burn the autorun.inf at the same level on the disk as
that folder (so it's _outside_ the folder you just burned).

don't forget to update the autorun.inf so that it reflects the "real"
location of the index file (in this example burn_directory/index.htm)
