T

The Who

My laptop came with the operating discs for XP MEDIA CENTER EDITION an
SERVICE PACK 1. I wiped my hard drive and re-installed XP but I am no
stuck in the middle of my XP installation because my laptop is askin
me to insert the disc labled XP SERVICE PACK 1 and I seem to hav
misplaced only that 1 disc.

I have looked all over the internet and I cant find any place to get
copy of the XP SERVICE PACK 1 disc. Even on the Microsoft website i
only has SERVICE PACK 3 information.

When I am asked to insert the SERVICE PACK 1 disc, would my compute
accept the XP SERVICE PACK 3 disc instead?

Please help me find any possible solution to this problem.

Thanks in advance for your time and help.

Download and install __either__ SP1a or SP2...

SP1a:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...79-FA3A-48BF-ADE5-023443E29D78&displaylang=en

SP2:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en

Ignore any and all warnings about not getting the download if you are only
updating a single computer. It's a bunch of bull. You can use it to update
one computer or 6000...

Then download and install SP3...

SP3:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...A8-5E76-401F-BE08-1E1555D4F3D4&displaylang=en

Enjoy!

Go to the MS website and download SP2 and SP3. SP2 contains all the fixes
for SP1 as well.

Install SP2 then SP3.

Service Pack 1 is no longer available for download, but SP1a, SP2 and
SP3 are still available. This is SP1a:

Unfortunately I'm not sure what kind of CD the install is looking for.
You can burn a data cd and expand the program you can download above to
it, but that still does not mean you got it in the right format or
folder etc.

Are you sure the installation is not just asking for the same CD you
have and its not in the drive any more? Have you contacted the maker
of the machine?

I doubt your laptop came with something called "SERVICE PACK 1."

Please describe your installation disk. What Service Pack level is it?
If it's SP1, see below.

If your installation CD is at SP level 1, then *that* is the CD you need
to insert. :)

The Media Center Edition version of XP is two discs. Think of them as Disc 1
and Disc 2.

Disc one installs the majority of the underlying operating system, disc 2
installs the Media Center components. After completing the installation of
disc 2 when it asks for "XP SERVICE PACK 1" it's really asking for you to
put disc one back in to complete the installation.

It's a pretty common point of confusion when installing Media Center. It's
worded confusingly but disc one *is* "Windows XP Service Pack 1."

For my own clarity:
I have ME2005 myself, supplied on my Dell Laptop. The CD I have is not
a Windows XP CD, or lets say it does not look like the Retail Home cd I
have with the reflective label and all. But it loads just like any
other XP I have, and it comes as only one CD. I know its an OEM CD, it
does not ask for an activation, but the process etc is the same as my
retail copy. So are you telling me then that this is something
special that Dell did to reduce the cd count?

The disc that came with your Dell is a DVD and has the contents of what
would be XP MCE 2005 disc one and two on a single disc. Other than that and
the fact that it looks for a Dell BIOS it is the same as an OEM 2 disc set
you would purchase from newegg et. al...

Works for me. Thanks!
