selective startup

In my old Win98 I could go to msconfig - selective startup - and disable all
but the 4 or 5 items I wanted on startup.
Then I just reboot into selective startup and use computer that way - no
problem.

Now in Win xp, if I do that, when I reboot it wants me to reset to Normal -
which means everything is checked.
So, how do I configure startup in XP to only load selective items?

In what manner does it want you to reset to Normal? If a prompt appears
at start up, saying there has been a change, check its "do not show again"
box.
