Seeking free web hosting (that doesn't disapear!)

Can anyone recommend any free web hosting sites? I don't need much
more than about 10 MB.

I don't want to use sites which have preformatted pages such as
Geocities/Yahoo.

In particular, I want to avoid those companies which have no track
record and which might just disappear suddenly.

http://www.250free.com/ has worked fine for me.

They put small banners above and below your web page but it is not
disturbing as I see it.

Uploading both via ftp and a simple form.

You don't have to use the Geocities preformatted pages. Go ahead and
write your own either by-hand or with any wysiwyg editor. Then use the
filemanager and easy-upload to send them.

Yes, they mess with it once you upload it and put their ads on it; but
it is free after all and they've been around forever.

Hey, nice site Roger. I created an account and will check it out. I see they
have pay accounts also.

Try out this really great freehost search engine.
http://www.free-webhosts.com/power-search.php

It's how I found one of my current webhosts.
I don't worry about how long a host will be around. I keep all my
websites backed up on my hard drive and I can find a new host and
upload my websites to it in no time at all. It does put a crimp in the
traffic for awhile but that recovers before too long.

So far I've been pretty lucky though. My host went down after the
florida hurricanes but was back up a week later.

Try http://www.netfirms.com/ I use them to host several non-profit
organization sites. They allow ftp uploading which is a plus for me.
The free hosting puts an advertising banner across the top of the web
pages, but they are actually pretty compatible. For example, a site I
do for an environmental organization gets a banner ad for hiking maps,
outdoor shops, camping equipment, etc.

I transferred my Geocities website over to www.50webs.com last night. No
banners, no sidebar of ads, etc. 60megs, e-mail, ftp, file manager
inside web browser, etc. Looks good so far. And my url is
http://my-name.50webs.com

Well worth checking out, ya'll.

http://www.netfirms.com/ seems to be very popular with several freeware
products that have been mentioned in ACF over the years. Some of the
freeware authors that were on netfirms have disappeared, but netfirms is
still there. Good recommendation.

I use doteasy.com for two of my domains. Hosting is free but you must
either purchase a domain through them ($25 p.a.) or transfer an existing
domain to them, ($18), which of course, you must then renew yearly for $25.
Therefore, the hosting isn't REALLY free, but actually costs $25.00 per year
The upside is that they have no advertisting, which Netfirms does not.
Netfirms has a rather nasty banner across the top of the page which really
screws the look up IMHO.

My best solution is to use bigbytes.net where for a mere eighty-two cents a
month (.82) you can get 20mg of space, unlimited pop3 emails, preinstalled
php scripts, cgi, mysql, etc., etc. It's a hell of a deal, and these people
are awesome at technical support, customer service and answering emails.

my two cents. YMMV.

Here is a free one I have had great success with:
http://themooseisloose.net/

- 25 Megs storage
- 1 Gig transfer
- No ads, no banners
- Support included.

They might charge a one-time setup fee of about $5.

Cheers,
