I used to be able to receive updates automatically from
Microsoft. I went to system properties and then auto
updates and the option is totally "grayed out". I don't
know what happened and how can I get it active again? I
tried to download updates from the internet and a cd w/no
luck. PLEASE HELP!!!!

Greetings:

Go to Start\Run\type services.msc hit enter and see if your "Auto Update"
service is running and is in auto mode.

See if Windows Auto Update has not been disabled in the Registry Editor
Start\Run\regedit\enter\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windo
ws\
WindowsUpdate\AU\NoAutoUpdate\Data should be 0\Restart Computer for change
to take effect.

The WindowsUpdate key is not there by default, if it is in your system, your
should consider
searching for a posible parasite which has disabled your Windows Auto
Update.

How to: configure automatic updates in Windows XP.

Hope this helps
