Security updates won't install

Last week I downloaded the multiple security updates for Windows XP. The
following two failed to install:
KB886903
KB886906

The problem is that every time I shut down the computer I get Windows
shutdown screen that displays the following alternating messages:
Do not turn off or unplug your computer. Your computer will shut down
automatically.

Installing update 1 of 2

Monday I left the computer on for two hours without shutdown
completing(I went out to lunch). The two messages were still cycling. I
then turned the computer off.

This morning I checked installed updates at the Windows Update site. The
list included the above security updates listed five times as failures,
a total of 10 items, over the last week along with the many installed
updates.

Two questions:
How do I get the updates to install?
And if I can't do that, how do I stop Windows trying to install these
updates when I shut down? And, yes, I know there's an option on the
shutdown message box that says "click here to shut down without
installing updates." I want to eliminate that choice and have Windows
shut down normally again.

Hi Lynn, perhaps try the WU NG to assist you, state what operating system you're
using
Windows Update newsgroup:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsupdate
or
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...=microsoft.public.windowsupdate&lang=en&cr=US

See if there are any errors in your log - and maybe post it as well by copying the
latest entries into your posting.
How to view the Update log in Windows
Open Internet Explorer and either type or copy and then paste this into the Address
bar:
%windir%\windowsupdate.log

Scroll down towards the bottom for the latest entries to locate the error code(s)
associated with the latest failed attempt to download.
